2021–2022 AMR One Health Pan-African Internship & Mentorship Programme
Theme: Involving Youth in the Mitigation of Antimicrobial Misuse and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
Building on the success of the inaugural cohort, the 2021–2022 internship expanded into a multidisciplinary One Health programme, bringing together young professionals from across Africa to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship, leadership, research, and advocacy through collaborative learning and mentorship.
Programme Overview
The Ducit Blue Foundation AMR One Health Pan-African Internship & Mentorship Programme was established to develop the next generation of antimicrobial stewardship champions across Sub-Saharan Africa. Supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Cohort 2 broadened participation beyond pharmacy to include young professionals from agriculture, medicine, microbiology, and veterinary medicine, reflecting the interconnected One Health approach to tackling antimicrobial resistance.
Over twelve weeks, participants engaged in expert-led virtual learning sessions, mentorship, collaborative activities, and research projects designed to strengthen technical knowledge, leadership capacity, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The programme also fostered regional networking among young professionals committed to advancing antimicrobial stewardship across Africa.
Programme Details
The 2021-2022 AMR One Health Pan-African Internship & Mentorship Programme was implemented by Ducit Blue Foundation with funding support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Delivered virtually over 12 weeks, from 8 November 2021 to 22 February 2022, the programme aimed to create a new generation of young antimicrobial stewardship champions across Sub-Saharan Africa through high-quality education, mentorship, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Cohort Profile
Cohort 2 expanded the programme’s reach by bringing together 25 interns from 13 African countries, representing five One Health disciplines: Agriculture, Medicine, Microbiology, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine. This multidisciplinary cohort strengthened cross-sector collaboration and reflected the programme’s growing regional impact.
Countries represented: Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania and Togo.
Mentorship
The internship was supported by 19 One Health mentors and 14 expert facilitators drawn from across the continent. Their expertise spanned human health, animal health, environmental health, epidemiology, data science, patient advocacy, and One Health practice, providing participants with technical guidance, career mentorship, and practical insights throughout the programme.
